2016 National Juried Photo Encaustic Exhibition
This newest exhibition of photo encaustic work beautifully blurs the lines between photography and painting; melding together what the camera captures with the vision of the what the artists sees. The encaustic medium becomes an integral part of the piece–enhancing the photo–rather than just an addition or afterthought. These selected works are clearly not just images layered with wax. Sometimes an entire image is used and manipulated, as with John Olson’s “Young Barrel Racer”, sometimes several images are used in a montage, as with Darren Terpstra’s “D is for Dragonfly” and sometimes, it’s just a hint of an image as with Kay Geraghty’s “Feather in Her Hat”. Viewing this grouping makes it evident when working with photographs and encaustics the options are endless. So what’s the commonality? a thoughtful new vision for what started as a traditional photograph.
Please come see the work for yourself.
